How many of your first grade classmates can you remember? Here are those I remember. Not too bad for 54 years. I can picture each face but wonder how many I'd recognize today. Sorry for those I have missed.
B.H.S. class of ’59
How much do you remember about your first grade class and how we became B. H. S. Class of 1959?
I can certainly remember my first day at Arlington Elementary School but, for the life of me I can only remember two of my classmates who started that cold January day. Yes, we started in January at mid-term.
The only two I can remember are David Jager and Bill Mims. Surely there were other kids, who started that day. The rest of our classmates were all much older in our eyes.
Here is the list of students in Miss Vinnie Shine’s 1st grade class as I remember it. Sammy Stevenson, Frankie Costa, Bill Smith, Alton Kizziah, Joe Cippoccio, Jimmy Watley, Judge Green, David Jager, Bill Mims, Carl Musso, Joe Cochran, Kenneth Roy, Alice Allison, Rebecca Boswell, Carol Cowan, Peggy Parsons, JoAnne Thornton, Ginger Rogers, Melinda Maudin, and there are faces that no longer have names. Of course I remember Douglas Smith, Joe Pope and Eleanor Hawkins but I can’t remember them in 1st grade. Were there other 1st grade classes at Arlington School that year? I purely disremember.
After the 4th grade those of us who started at mid-term were required to attend Summer School, the most boring and disappointing summer of my life. That summer I met new friends from Vance and Jonesboro Schools because all mid-term make up classes were held at Arlington.
Seventh grade saw us all thrown into the melting pot of Junior High School. B.J.H.S was under construction so all of were bundled together at Jonesboro Elementary for our first semester of Jr. High School. Several months into the year, we moved into B. J. H. S. It was it this time I realized that I was a member in good standing of the Bessemer High School Class of 1959.
